A Weekly Look at the North Carolina General Assembly
Every week, the North Carolina General Assembly makes decisions that affect our schools, local governments, businesses, public safety, health care, and our daily lives. Most people don’t have time to follow committee meetings or read hundreds of pages of legislation. That’s understandable.
That’s why I’m starting this weekly feature: From Raleigh to Home.
Each Monday, I’ll highlight a few of the most important actions coming out of Raleigh, explain them in plain English, discuss how they could affect Senate District 44, and share my perspective as a retired public school teacher, community volunteer, and candidate for the North Carolina Senate.
My goal isn’t to tell you what to think. It’s to explain what’s happening and why it matters here at home.

Senate Bill 153
Plain Summary

Sen. Ted Alexander’s Position
Sen. Ted Alexander supported Senate Bill 153. Supporters say it strengthens public safety, improves cooperation with federal authorities, and promotes consistent enforcement of immigration laws throughout the state.
Impact on Senate District 44
This legislation could affect local law enforcement agencies, employers, schools, churches, and many families across Cleveland County, Lincoln County, and the Cherryville area of Gaston County. Agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and other industries in our district depend on immigrant workers. Supporters believe the bill improves public safety. Critics worry it could make some people less willing to report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement because of concerns about their immigration status.
My Perspective
Every community deserves to be safe, and people who commit violent crimes should be held accountable. At the same time, public safety depends on trust. Victims and witnesses should feel comfortable reporting crimes and working with law enforcement. We should be able to enforce the law while maintaining that trust.
The North Carolina State Budget
Plain Summary
North Carolina is now operating under the new state budget enacted by the General Assembly. The budget determines how state tax dollars are invested in public education, health care, transportation, public safety, and many other services.
Sen. Ted Alexander’s Position
Sen. Alexander voted for the budget and has described it as an investment in teachers, law enforcement, schools, infrastructure, and local communities while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
Impact on Senate District 44
The state budget reaches every community in our district. It affects our public schools, community colleges, roads, emergency services, economic development, and many local programs. Whether you agree with every spending decision or not, the budget will shape daily life throughout our communities.
My Perspective
A budget is more than a financial document. It reflects our priorities as a state. As a retired public school teacher, I’ll always pay close attention to how we invest in public education, support working families, strengthen health care, and prepare our communities for responsible growth. Every tax dollar should be spent wisely and produce real results for the people of North Carolina.
House Bill 958

House Bill 958 makes several changes to North Carolina’s election laws, including election administration, voting procedures, ballot handling, and oversight of elections.
Sen. Ted Alexander’s Position

My Perspective
North Carolinians deserve elections that are secure, transparent, and accessible. Protecting election integrity and protecting every eligible citizen’s right to vote should go hand in hand. Public confidence grows when elections are fair, well managed, and trusted by the people.
Looking Ahead
The decisions made in Raleigh don’t stay in Raleigh.
They affect our classrooms, our farms, our small businesses, our hospitals, our roads, and our families.
